Frequently Asked Questions

Is Acupuncture painful?

This is probably the most common question I get because many people have only experienced needles for injections or blood-draws which can be very uncomfortable. However acupuncture needles are much thinner, as many as 18 acupuncture needles can fit inside of a standard blood-draw hypodermic needle!
The experience of acupuncture is very relaxing, it is common to fall asleep during a treatment. Normal sensations are a slight prick at insertion or no sensation at all. When the needle points are stimulated (what acupuncturists call de-qi)  you may experience sensations such as a gentle flowing or heavy feeling, pulsing, or twitching, all good signs that qi (vital energy) has been activated and that stuck energy is moving!

How should I prepare for an appointment?

It is best to eat a light snack before your appointment and to wear loose clothing so arms and legs are easier to access for treatment. I also recommend bringing water and to stay hydrated after a treatment, this will help ground and stabilize your energy after acupuncture.

How does Acupuncture work?

Acupuncture stimulates certain points along energy pathways of the body to restore harmony and balance and regain optimal function. When acupuncture points are stimulated it triggers the release of biochemical signals via the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems which influence the body's self-regulating capacities and facilitates healing.

Is Acupuncture safe?

Yes! Licensed Acupuncturists receive extensive training in a four-year program consisting of 2,992 hours of education (including 1,050 hours of clinical practice) to learn how to safely administer acupuncture treatments. Only single-use, sterile, disposable needles are used, and are discarded after each treatment. Side effects are minimal and may include temporary bruising or soreness at the needle site.

How many treatments will I need?

This question can be answered better after your initial appointment as there are a lot of factors affecting the length of treatment. On average acute concerns are often treated within 3-5 treatments, however chronic concerns may take around 8-10 treatments or more. I often find that patients notice improvement within 6-8 treatments for most conditions.

Can I get acupuncture while pregnant?

Yes! Acupuncture is wonderful to ease discomfort in pregnancy and support a healthy pregnancy overall. There are some points that are contraindicated in pregnancy however, so it is important to inform your provider if you are currently pregnant.

Do you accept insurance?

I can provide a Superbill for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement, provided your insurance includes coverage of acupuncture treatments in your policy. Payment is required at the time of service as I do not accept insurance.
